DE HUIZEN VAN TOONTJE

“Jongens, ik heb weer een plantje gekregen”, meldde ik in de staf Stedelijke Ontwikkeling. “Dit keer geen vergeet-me-nietje,  maar dat betekent toch dat het alweer niet vanzelf gaat aan de Hamdijk”. Toontje nam 3 en een 1/2 jaar geleden het inititief om een paar huizen te bouwen bij het woonwagenkamp. Er is nog wat ruimte en zo kunnen de kinderen van het kamp dicht bij hun ouders blijven. Dat sloot in 2014 perfect aan bij de toen net verworven UNESCO-status van immaterieel erfgoed voor de woonwagencultuur. En het is goed voor mantelzorg en hun onderlinge samenhang, zo dachtten de toenmalig collega wethouder Bob Bergkamp en ik. Het werd nog een lang proces.

 

Ook Breda kent immers een lange geschiedenis met het ‘normaliseren’ van de woonwagenkampen. Dus was het een akkoord met een dikke “ja, mits”. Mits het wel voldeed aan veel voorwaarden. Het bestemmingsplan is altijd een bekende hobbel. En het moeten wel gewone stenen huizen worden, die voldoen aan het bouwbesluit. De huizen moeten echt bestemd zijn voor de kinderen van het kamp zelf. En nog zo meer van die eisen. Al drie jaar lang krijg ik nu om de zoveel maanden een plantje van Toontje, een vergeet-me-nietje. Dat is zijn manier om het contact warm te houden. Meestal is dat op het een moment dat het even niet helemaal lekker loopt in die uitwerking van de mitsen en maren. We komen er dan met wat duwen en trekken altijd wel weer aan uit.

Het mag dan allemaal lang duren, het is Toontje toch maar mooi gelukt. Die huizen komen er. Daar mag hij echt trots op zijn.  Het bewijst ook maar weer eens dat als we elkaars cultuur respecteren, we een heel eind kunnen komen samen. Het kan vanaf nu hard gaan. Ik moet maar eens gaan nadenken welk plantje ik hem zal geven bij het slaan van de eerste paal.
